I leave Marathon to drive the 300+miles to Cape Canaveral which takes most of the day. I check into the Comfort Inns Cocoa Beach ($78, 1nght). There’s an incredible thunderstorm in the evening that I wander around watching, a spectacular display of lightening, great free entertainment!
Check out in the morning and head to Kennedy Space Center. Wow, what an amazing place! Highlights being “Rocket Garden” with the various rockets used through the early period of space exploration, the IMAX theatre with it’s spectacular presentation of images from the Hubble Telescope and the bus tour that gives you a drive-by view of the space shuttle launch pad, experience of the historic Apollo 8 launch and a wander below the massive 363-foot-long Saturn V rocket at the Apollo/Saturn V Center as well as getting into one of the Launch Control Centers.
Kennedy Space Center is a great day out with fascinating exhibits and information on the history of space travel, I also picked up some “space food” – freeze-dried ice cream.
On leaving the Space Center I drive about 200 miles south to Fort Lauderdale to Birch Patio Motel ($133, 2nghts) which was great value for the size of place with a proper kitchen, nice pool and short stroll from the beachfront.
Visited local Publix supermarket, which had a great selection of fresh foods and kept me in bacon for the couple of days. Spent the time lazily reading on the beach and by the pool and a bit of wandering the waterways that divide up the city’s land, admiring the massive boats moored by beautiful houses that seems the norm for the area!
