After an evening flight from San Francisco to LA, it’s the red-eye flight to Miami followed by morning flight to Bogota, arriving mid-afternoon. Change some $s to pesos and grab a taxi for a mad journey (lots of weaving in and out of the heavy traffic!) into town to La Candelaria, a historic district in downtown Bogota.
The Botero Museum, with his paintings and sculptures of proportionately exaggerated figures is a couple of streets away, the Museo Del Oro, with it’s collection of more than 36,000 pieces of gold, wood, shell and stone, has impressive exhibitions.
On the teleferico and funicular up Monserrate the size and scale of the city of Bogota is revealed. Mountains border the city on three sides and it sits at an altitude of 2,625m.
